How much salt should I put in my salt tank?

One of the most common questions we get is, "How much salt should I put in my water softener brine tank?"

The answer to this question is quite simple. First, we look at the size and shape of the brine cabinet.

Is the brine tank round or square? Does your tank stand about waist high? These two style of brine cabinets are the most common.

Do you have a round brine tank? If so, we recommend only adding salt when the softener salt gets down to about one-fourth of the way down in the tank. When it reaches this point, add salt until the level reaches up to the top of the white brine well in the tank.

If you don't have a round brine tank, then you must have a square brine tank. If this is the case, we recommend adding salt to the brine cabinet only when the salt level gets down to about one-third the way down. When it gets down to this level, add the salt until it reaches the top of the brine well cap.

The reason we make these recommendations is based on our experience in the field. You do not want to maintain a full salt tank. A constant full salt tank can cause salt bridging. This is due to our Florida humidity. It will cause the salt to dissolve and form a hard layer. The hard layer keeps the salt from falling as it should. This will make the water not feel soft or use salt.

Keep your home in top shape with regular maintenance and professional attention. A small issue can grow into a major situation if you don't take care of it rather quickly.
